So what's it like?
Walking
Millstatt is hard to beat when it comes to walking. The entire lake shore is one long footpath, easily broken into segments by hopping on the boats criss-crossing the lake. With the Nockalm National Park surrounding Millstatt, don't miss the opportunity to venture into the hills. Head up from the town of Döbriach for a walk up to Weissen Felsen for a rewarding view over the lake, and climb higher for a view down to Döbriach from the Orchindeenwand Rock. A wooded path takes you back at lower levels along to Millstatt. If you're looking for more of a challenge, set out from Haus Spieler for a circular route around the Mirnock rock for some wonderful views and you spiral up to 980m.
Why not try -- Hitching a ride on the Millstatt minibus which takes hikers and cyclists up to the plateau of Obermillstatt throughout the day - a great starting point for a host of walks
- Soaring to 2100m altitude from the town of Bad Kleinkirchem by cable car to the pinnacle of the National Park with 400km of walking routes. Unwind with a dip in the town's thermal spas at the end of your walk.
- Clipping on to and challenge yourself on the Bella Vista Via Ferrata near Spittal for a climb up to Hohe Leier at 2774m and along to the Rossalmscharte pass - all under the watchful eye of a qualified mountain guide
Culture
Lake Millstatt, in Austria's most southerly province of Carinthia, got its name from Emperor Domition, a Christian convert, who threw 'mille statuae' (a thousand heathen statues) into the lake. The town itself perches on the shoreline surrounded by woodland. It's home to an 11th Century Benedictine Monastery - look out for the fantastical and monstrous faces that peer at you from behind the pillars in the entrance. Wander round the attached museum, and learn more about the local history. Stroll along the lakefront for some stunning views across the lake - it's possible to walk the entire shoreline of Millstatt. Or take to the water and hop on a sailing or ferry boat to explore the other small villages dotted around the shoreline.
Explore the market in Millstatt on Monday evenings (mid June - mid September) with a bustling atmosphere and a host of colourful wares to choose from. Music fills the air in Millstatt through the summer months, with the Musicwochen festival running from May to September - everything from jazz, choral and classical concerts can be enjoyed. And in August, rally the troops and head to the Medieval Tournament at the nearby Sommergg castle. Why not try -- Getting the best views of Lake Millstatt with a trip up the Goldeck cable car in Spittal - the bonus being it's FREE with your Carinthia Card
- Savouring Austria's kaffeehaus culture and tuck into coffee and cake in one of Millstatt's many cafes
- Crossing the border for a day trip to picture perfect Lake Bled in Slovenia, or head to Italy's city on stilts, Venice.
