  • So what's it like?

This quiet corner of Lake Garda is less commercialised but well known for its natural beauty. Sub-tropical plants thrive in the mild climate that this area enjoys and a visit to the Hruska Botanical Gardens is a must. Ferries to other towns on the lake call at the small harbour situated in the traffic-free centre with its promenade lined with flowering trees and inviting cafés. Gabriele D'Annunzio, poet and fervent nationalist, built his curious villa Il Vittoriale here which is now open to the public.

    Relax and discover

    Local culture
Nestled above the town is the tropical Hrusko Botanical Gardens, named after its founder, Arthur Hruska. Take a stroll amongst the bamboo, banana plants and many other exotic species, whilst admiring the works of modern art dotted among the plants. Gardone was the final home and resting place of Gabrielle D’Annunzio, an infamous Italian poet. His house, Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, mirrors his eccentric personality – a hypochondriac with a phobia of light, a dark sense of humour and an obsession with art. And it is well worth a visit. A guide will take you through an eclectic mix of Gothic symbolism, statues of weeping monks and golden Buddhas – all testaments to his “religion of art”. You can also walk at leisure through his equally ostentatious garden, with its own amphitheatre, Round Table-esque tomb and a World War battle ship built into the hillside.

    Short breaks
If you've not got time for a week long holiday, or just fancy a few extra days away, then our short breaks are the perfect choice. 3 and 4 night short breaks are available in Gardone at the Hotel Du Lac.

    Evening atmosphere
As the sun sets, imitate Winston Churchill by sipping a Bellini in the Grand Hotel’s bar. This should be followed by a long relaxing dinner at one of the lake front restaurants. The more adventurous should head for a meal at Gli Angelli, a fantastic restaurant hidden away in Gardone Sopra. The uphill walk from Gardone Riviera is sure to work up a healthy appetite!
