So what's it like?
The neighbouring resorts of Cadenabbia, Tremezzo and Menaggio lie together on the sunny western shore of Lake Como, with superb views across the lake to Bellagio, the pearl of the lake, where the lake’s three forks meet. Menaggio and Bellagio are larger and livelier, with a buzzing cosmopolitan atmosphere and pretty cobbled streets. The adjacent villages of Tremezzo and Cadenabbia hug the road from Como to Switzerland and provide great bases for exploring. In addition to their colourful lakeside hotels, shops and pavement cafés, all resorts are well connected with each other by boat and for short trips to other parts of the lake.

An favourite haunt of the European aristocracy, Lake Como is renowned for its majestic scenery and wildlife and the dramatic backdrop of the Grigna mountains. The turquoise waters of Italy’s deepest lake are surrounded by traditional Venetian villas and attractive waterfront villages. The gardens of Villa Carlotta are a must-see and film buffs will love the 16th century Villa Balbianello, which was used as Mr White’s hideaway in Casino Royale. Adrenaline junkies can try their hand at windsurfing and waterskiing and we’d recommend renting a speedboat and zipping around the lake - get your binoculars ready for spotting the glitterati.
Get to know the locals in the pretty lakefront bars and cafés of Cadenabbia and Tremezzo or head for cosmopolitan Menaggio and devour a 4-course meal overlooking the pretty piazza. If you’re after the hottest spots on the lake, catch the ferry across to Bellagio and explore its artisan shops before settling down in one of George Clooney’s favourite watering holes for a well-earned Spritz.
