Piran is one of the best preserved medieval towns on the Slovenian coast and a great place to experience Slovenia's history as part of the Venetian Empire. Head to Tartinijev trg (Piran Square) and discover some typical Venetian influenced architecture. Wander through the square and admire the central bronze monument dedicated to the famous violinist and composer Guiseppi Tartini who grew up in the town. Away from the square find the Church of St. George and marvel at the famous Renaissance style bell tower and be seriously impressed by the richly ornamented interior.

After a day absorbing the history of Piran, the neighbouring Portoroz offers something a little more light hearted. Head to the promenade lined with great restaurants and nightclubs and see the area come alive in the evening. After dinner try your luck at the gaming tables or slot machines in Portoroz casino.

    Why not try -

    • Climbing the city wall of Piran, with its seven towers for fabulous views over the city and ocean
    • Catching an open air concert in Piran's fabulous Tartini square
    • A day trip to the Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle, part of the stunning and unique Karst landscape

    Beaches

Whilst the Slovenian coastline is only 26 miles long it still has its share of good beaches. Grab your beach towel and get ready for a day basking on one of the great sandy beaches of Portoroz, lapped by the clear, aqua blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. For a less touristy feel, the rocky and pebbled beach areas of Piran feel a little bit more 'off the beaten track'. If at any point you do find yourself craving a little more activity, you don't have to stray very far from your lounger. Refresh yourself with a dip in the sea, a jog down the beach or head out onto the water and try you hand at sailing or windsurfing.

    Why not try -

    • One of the many watersports available along the coast
    • Treating yourself at one of the resorts excellent spas
    • Visiting the unusual fresh water lake in Fiesa or the sea-salt plains at Strunjan
