So what's it like?
Lugano sits next to the impressive Monte San Salvatore, from the top of this mount the views looking over the lake and Lugano are fabulous. The city itself has a historic, traffic free centre with narrow streets, arcades, galleries and cafés. Piazza della Riforma is the meeting point between the heart of the town and the promenade along the lakeside.

Relax and discover
Fun on the water: Take a cruise on Lake Lugano and visit one of the traditional fishing villages. Hire a boat or kayak to explore the lake yourself. Visit one of the lakeside lidos - relax and soak up some rays or jump in and go for a swim.
By rail: The train transfer from Zurich to Lugano is stunning. You'll be whisked along the shores of Lake Zurich and Lucerne before the train dives into the Gotthard Tunnel. On the other side, the landscape changes as the train drops down the valley to Bellinzona.
Walking: The varied terrain and the warm sunny climate equal more than the sum of the parts. From the fishing village of Gandria, walk back to Lugano along the scenic Olive Tree Path. As the path climbs through the narrow streets you'll weave your way out of the village before the path reveals the beauty of Lake Lugano and the surrounding woodland.
Local Culture: With its balmy climate devour Italian style ice creams in the main piazza. The lake promenade has a mixture of formal gardens and fascinating sculptures and is a popular place for a stroll; as are the winding traffic free shopping streets.
